Booz Allen Hamilton, ASID Foundation, and Daltile Celebrate Innovative Design at Wellness Showcase

Daltile, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Foundation and Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) partnered to host a Wellness Showcase at Booz Allen Hamilton's Innovation Center. Held on Tuesday, March 20, the event, inspired by the 2017 Daltile Interior Design Scholarship, Presented by the ASID Foundation, featured a panel of industry experts who discussed how user-centricity and health and wellness trends are revolutionizing interior design in the work environment. The event also honored the 2017 scholarship winner, Baileigh Petty from Utah State University, who received a $10,000 award for her winning design that reimagined the Booz Allen Innovation Center space.

“To celebrate the success of the scholarship competition and continue conversations about health and wellness in workplace design, we wanted to host this special event and welcome the community to the Innovation Center,” said Brinda Sen Gupta, deputy director of the Booz Allen Innovation Center. “We were excited to give guests a glimpse of the cutting-edge design we have implemented at the Innovation Center, and inspire the community to think about how they can incorporate wellness into future projects.”

The highlight of the event was a panel on wellness in workplace design moderated by Susan Wiggins, CAE, Hon. IDC, senior strategic advisor, ASID. The panel featured Susan Chung, Ph.D., senior associate, research, ASID; Mari Anne Randall, LEED AP, director of market innovation for the commercial sector, Daltile; Andy Yeh, LEED AP, principal, FOX Architects, and Booz Allen Hamilton’s Sen Gupta, LEED AP. The experts tackled a variety of topics including wellness in design, the future of sustainability and wellness, and how the industry is responding to this growing trend.

“Through the panel, we wanted to engage our guests to think about wellness in design and what this will mean for the industry moving forward,” said BJ Miller, FASID, CCIM, chair of the ASID Foundation. “The interior design industry is moving toward wellness and occupant health, and we wanted to provide a stage for the building and design community to explore the implications of this growing trend.”

The 2017 scholarship winner was also onsite for the festivities. Petty discussed her winning project with guests throughout the event. The contest, which challenged students to reimagine Booz Allen’s Innovation Center incorporating Fitwel standards, received entries from accredited colleges and universities from across the country.

“Due to the importance of employee health in today’s design, we want to educate the community about how tile inherently fits in with this trend, as it is free of harmful pollutants, and is an eco-friendly design option,” said Paij Thorn-Brooks, vice president of marketing for Dal-Tile Corporation. “The Daltile Interior Design Scholarship has been one of the key ways we have created awareness of the benefits of tile with the next generation of architects and designers. We were so excited to be part of the Wellness Design Showcase and have Baileigh attend to see her experience come full circle.”
